Operator Splitting

چکیده
Abstract In mathematics, a common approach to solving new problem is break down the into sub-problems that you know how solve and then try glue pieces together yield solution of problem. This also very useful in software development; well-tested can be glued order obtain solutions wider class problems. Operator splitting technique illustrates this principle well. Rather complex equations broken more familiar problems solved individually. It’s miracle it works, but does. And it’s no because there are proofs convergence. Anyway, we will illustrate operator with two examples come back when become challenging.

Operator splitting
Operator splitting is a numerical method of computing the solution to a differential equation. The splitting method separates the original equation into two parts over a time step, separately computes the solution to each part, and then combines the two separate solutions to form a solution to the original equation. A canonical example is splitting of diffusion terms and convection terms in a c...
متن کاملCorrected Operator Splitting
We present a corrected operator splitting COS method for solving nonlinear parabolic equations of convection di usion type The main feature of this method is the ability to correctly resolve nonlinear shock fronts for large time steps as opposed to standard operator splitting OS which fails to do so COS is based on solving a conservation law for modeling convection a heat type equation for mode...
متن کاملOperator Splitting for Kdv
We apply the method of operator splitting on the generalized Korteweg{de Vries (KdV) equation ut +f(u)x+"uxxx = 0, by solving the nonlinear conservation law ut +f(u)x = 0 and the linear dispersive equation ut + "uxxx = 0 sequentially. We prove that if the approximation obtained by operator splitting converges, then the limit function is a weak solution of the generalized KdV equation. Convergen...
متن کاملAdaptive Three Operator Splitting
We propose and analyze a novel adaptive step size variant of the Davis-Yin three operator splitting, a method that can solve optimization problems composed of a sum of a smooth term for which we have access to its gradient and an arbitrary number of potentially non-smooth terms for which we have access to their proximal operator. The proposed method leverages local information of the objective ...
متن کاملOperator splitting and multigrid methods
In general we will be searching for methods of solving problems containing terms where the courant condition is too restrictive for practical computation; typical in this regard is the inclusion of diffusion or thermal conduction which contain second derivatives in space implying that time steps must scale as ∆t ∝ 1/(∆x). In this case we can not solve the problems explicitly but rather solve (a...
